UMAR Al-Khattab R.A, sering melakukan siasatan sendiri untuk mengetahui keadaan rakyat jelata di bawah kerajaannya.
Suatu malam, beliau mendengar tangisan kanak-kanak dari sebuah rumah
kecil di hujung desa. Dilihatnya seorang ibu yang dikelilingi
anak-anaknya sedang memasak sesuatu di dalam periuk. Setiap kali anaknya
menangis, si ibu akan berkata “Tunggulah sebentar,…. makanan ini sedang
ibu masak…”
Saidina Umar memerhatikan dari jauh dan merasa heran karena ucapan
tersebut diulangi beberapa kali. Walaupun si ibu telah memasak untuk
tempo masa yang agak lama.
Saidina Umar memberanikan diri untuk menyiasat perkara tersebut.
Beliau memberi salam dan meminta izin untuk memasuki rumah itu. Lalu dia
bertanya kepada ibu tua itu, “Mengapa anak-anak ibu tidak berhenti
menangis?”
“Hal ini karena mereka sangat lapar,” jawab si ibu.
“Mengapa tidak diberikan makanan yang ibu masak dari tadi?” Umar bertanya lagi.
“Tidak ada makanan…. Periuk yang saya masak dari tadi hanya berisi
batu untuk mendiamkan anak-anak…. Biarlah mereka pikir bahawa saya
sedang memasak makanan…dan saya berharap supaya mereka akan berhenti
menangis kerana keletihan dan tertidur….” jawab ibu tua itu.
“Apakah ibu sering berbuat begini?” tanya Umar ingin tahu.
“Benar,… Saya hidup sebatang kara…. tidak memiliki saudara-mara dan
suami tempat bergantung,” jawab ibu tadi dengan nada kesal sambil
berusaha menyembunyikan keperitan hidupnya.
“Mengapa ibu tidak meminta bantuan pada khalifah? Bukankah ia harus
memberikan bantuan dengan memberikan uang dari Baitulmal? Dengan cara
itu akan dapat membantu meringankan kehidupan ibu dan anak-anak…”
nasihat Umar.
“Khalifah telah berbuat zalim pada kami anak-beranak…” jawab si ibu.
Terkejut Saidina Umar mendengarkan ucapan Ibu tua itu tadi,
“Bagaimana khalifah telah berbuat zalim pada ibu? Terangkan kepada saya…
” Saidina Umar ingin tahu.
“Saya sangat kesal dengan pemerintahannya…. Beliau seharusnya melihat
keadaan rakyatnya dalam kehidupan nyata,….. Banyak orang yang senasib
dengan saya…”
Umar langsung menangis mendengar keluhan wanita tersebut.
Saidina Umar telah kembali ke Madinah menuju ke Baitulmal…. Beliau
sendiri yang kemudian mengeluarkan makanan dari Baitulmal dan
membawanya pada malam itu juga ke rumah ibu tua tersebut tanpa bantuan
orang lain.
Ibu tua tersebut menyatakan terima kasih yang tidak terhingga dan
mengatakan kepada Saidina Umar. “Sepatutnya kamu lah yang layak menjadi
khalifah ” ujarnya. Dia tidak tahu bahwa yang menolongnya itu adalah
Khalifah Umar.
Keesokannya Saidina Umar telah memanggil Ibu tua itu untuk datang
menghadapnya. Alangkah terkejutnya Ibu tua itu apabila melihat Khalifah
zalim yang disangkakan-nya itu adalah sebenarnya lelaki yang datang
membantunya malam tadi.
